Do cover letters still matter Heres what data shows

Do titel letters still matter Heres what data showsDo cover letters still matter Heres what data showsIf you ever tried to craft a cover letter, you know how daunting this task can be. The Internet is full of tips on how to create a perfect cover letter, but they dont make the process less difficult and time-consuming.The question is Is the result worth the effort? Do companies still want candidates to send them the cover letters? Some studies say that only 18% of recruiters consider cover letters important. Others state that 56% of employers want applicants to send cover letters. Jointly, with the CV Compiler team, we performed our own data-driven research to see if cover letters really matter in 2019.Follow Ladders on FlipboardFollow Ladders magazines on Flipboard covering Happiness, Productivity, Job Satisfaction, Neuroscience, and moreHow many tech companies do demand a cover letter? To perform the analysis, weve looked through 300 tech vacancies from the companies of 3 kindsTech g iants 5000+ employees (such as Google, Facebook, Amazon)Medium-sized companies 501-1000 employees (such as Snowflake, Puppet, Smartronix)Fast-growing startups 1-200 employees (such as Perfecta, Pietech, Exxact). For objectivity, we took only 1 vacancy per company. The following chart shows the result of our analysis - the number of tech companies that had a field for a cover letter in their application formsAs you see, the smaller the companies are, the more often they demand a cover letter. I guess thats because of the huge number of applications recruiters at big companies receive for each vacancy. They barely have time to look through all of the resumes, elend saying anything about cover letters. So, the tech giants rarely include the corresponding field to their application forms not to waste both recruiters and candidates time.In general, more than half of tech companies (56%) still add the cover letter fields to their application forms. Truth be told, in the prevailing majorit y of those forms, the cover letter fields were optional. However, it would be wrong to say that the habit of writing cover letters already belongs to the past. So, is a cover letter really important?Id rather say if there is a possibility to add a cover letter, better do it. However, it shouldnt be the boring tirade about how communicable and stress-resistant you are. We usually give our users the following cover letter tipsSpecify the lokalitt youre applying for, and tell where you discovered it.Show your interest in the particular position and company. Research on the companys recent projects and achievements, and briefly describe what stunned you the most and why you want to work exactly there.Dont describe your personal qualities, describe the benefits an employer will get if they hire you. It will be perfect if you briefly list your major accomplishments and prove them with numbers. Our favorite tip Keep things short, (300 words or less will be perfect). What format should a cover letter have? Here are the preferences for different cover letter formats among those companies that had a corresponding field in their application formsAs we were analyzing the vacancies, we noticed that startups usually had much simpler application forms than tech giants. So, its no wonder that many small companies prefer written text - they just add another text field along with the ones for your name, e-mail, and location. Some of such fields allow you to format your writing, some of them dont. As of the size of the written cover letter, companies usually want you to write up to 4000 symbols. In general, most of the companies want candidates to attach a file. Usually, the supported formats are .docx, .pdf, .html, .xlsx, or .jpg. So, if youre going to start looking for new jobs, Id recommend you to prepare a cover letter template in one of those formats. However, for those especially creative, attaching videos is also allowed in some of the forms ??Avoiding pitfallsMy other advice is read the vacancies really carefully. You can come across something like this or this or even this and it would be a pity to miss an excellent job opportunity because of such a tiny detail.Surely, if an employer clearly states that they dont accept cover letters, or doesnt mention them in the list of the necessary documents, dont send one.If youre still in doubt about whether you need a cover letter or not, here is another fact from our research. Among those companies, who had a field for a cover letter, 56% of tech giants, 60% of medium-sized companies, and 43% of start-ups put the Cover Letter field near the top of their application forms. Is LinkedIn a new cover letter? While browsing through the tech vacancies, we noticed another interesting tendency many companies add the LinkedIns Quick Apply buttons to their application forms. To be more precise, Im talking about 38% of big companies, 36% of medium-size companies, and 21% of startups. In addition to that, 12% of big compa nies, 3% of medium-size companies, and 10% of startups allow applying through Indeed, Seek, Xing, SmartProfile, or even Facebook. So, if youre not a big groupie of spending 5-20 minutes on filling each application form, optimizing your social media profiles might be a good time investment. Along with the opportunity to apply more quickly, that will increase your web presence, which may result in attractive offers coming at your door even without searching and applying. As you now see, cover letters in the tech industry havent gone far in the past yet. I guess that for non-tech jobs, such as those in design or marketing, theyre even more important. So, it would be great if you had a well-structured cover letter template, which you could adjust to every (tech) vacancy you apply to. Keep your cover letters focused, short, and personalized, and some of them may help you get that sought-after job somedayThis article was brought to you by the team of CV Compiler, the Machine Learning-powere d resume enhancement tool for software engineers, designers, and managers in tech.Andrew Stetsenko is an HR-Tech entrepreneur, who founded Relocate.me, GlossaryTech, and CV Compiler, products used by recruiters and software engineers worldwide. How to Prevent Your ATS from Working Against You

How to Prevent Your ATS from Working Against YouHow to Prevent Your ATS from Working Against YouThe first applicant tracking systems were developed in the early days of the Internet, when companies were eager to get the most out of technology. In their eagerness to build comprehensive systems, many ATS vendors and employers overcomplicated the application process by adding too many features without taking the user experience into account. The application process is the service part of a companys employer brand similar to the role of customer service, employers should make sure their zugnglich application process is aligned with the companys values and does not turn qualified candidates away. Its no different than when customer service organizations work to enhance the company brand by providing service representatives with scripts, behavior guidelines, etc.The Evolution of the InternetThe web has evolved and so has user behavior. There has been a marked shift to mobile as millions of smartphones and tablets have been purchased by consumers51% of all time spent on digital media in the U.S. occurs on a smartphone or tablet (comScore).51% of users open emails on mobile devices (Litmus). On a global basis, 64% of all web users accessed the Internet via smartphone, and 28% via tablet (Global Web Index).Nearly one-third of all job search traffic at Simply Hired occurs on mobile devices.52% of the email job alerts sent by Simply Hired are opened on mobile devices. As web usage shifts to mobile, users want to take their data with them, and be able to access it from any device. Cloud storage solutions have grown exponentially in the past several years.Dropbox, a popular cloud storage app, has 200 million users worldwide (Wall Street Journal).Google Drive, Googles cloud storage service, has more than 120 million users. Google Drive users are required to have a Gmail or Google Apps account. Gmail, with over 425 million users, is the top free email dienst in the U.S., and in creased its share significantly in 2013 (Litmus). Google Apps is used by more than five million businessesand 66 of the top 100 universities. This data indicates that ability to store documents (such as resumes and cover letters) in the cloud and access them from any device is now seen as a necessity rather than a convenience for many web users. They are also practical in their use of the web, viewing LinkedIn (with over 200 million users and growing at a rate of 2 users per second) as an online resume. The Impact of Device Proliferation and Cloud Storage on the Application ExperienceUsers are highly attuned to redundancy and kinks in their online experience. They have come to expect ease-of-use after years of using products and services by companies that invest heavily in user experience testing (such as Google, Apple, and Facebook). Web users readily complain about problems they encounter in online reviews, forums, and on social media. Though they are likely to interact with your co mpany only once when they complete an online application the ATS is an extension of your employer brand and should be treated as such.A user-friendly job application experience through your ATS enhances your employer brand, positioning your company as efficient and respectful of the candidates time. A poor experience with an ATS can lead candidates to draw erroneous conclusions about what its like to work at your company. If your ATS asks for unnecessary or redundant information, provides insufficient options for the explanation of unusual life circumstances, or sends automated rejections minutes after scanning a resume for keywords, candidates can draw the following conclusionsThey are not technology-friendly.They must be really bureaucratic and inefficient. They are going to require too much of me.They are inflexible. They are just going to treat me like a number. How to Improve the Candidate Application ExperienceAs the primary line of communication between your company and its ne xt great employee, the ATS deserves special consideration. Here are some tips to help you create a candidate-friendly application experience.Take a self-audit of your own application process and compare it to other companies in your area. Do this for both mobile and desktop.Make a list of what information you are currently collecting from candidates. Categorize information into four buckets1. Absolutely necessary (name, contact information, work history, education, etc.)2. Nice to have, but not necessary (e.g., college GPA)3. Can be collected later (such as reference information or social security number)4. Not at all necessary (e.g. exact dates of previous employment and graduations)Look at your companys mission and values statements. If Do more with less is a core value, does the candidate experience support that? Consider how to align the candidate experience with the companys core values.Measure and analyze1. Visits to your employer site by device type2.Application drop-off rate Consider integrating services like LinkedIn, Google Drive, and Dropbox into your application process. Fixated on fitness

Fixated on fitness Fixated on fitnessPosted August 2, 2013, by Marni WilliamsHave you noticed that everyone seems to be running a half-marathon these days, going CrossFit crazy or toughing it out with Tough Mudder? Raving on about core strength? Pledging a no-sugar month or Instagramming their homemade low-carb-high-protein snacks? Australia just cant stop talking about fitness but lets face it, its about time. Were all shocked by the projections by 2025 over three quarters of Australians are set to be overweight or obese and 3 million will have adult diabetes. With obesity now killing three times more people than malnutrition, the tide has definitely turned, and its no wonder were all throwing out the chips and reaching for the chia seeds. If you have caught yurself yakking about nailing a yoga pose or winning your CrossFit challenge a little too often, then you might also be toying with the idea of going from fitness freak to fitness guru and there would be no better time. With participation set to increase from 4 million to 7.15 million by 2020, it appears our fitness fixation is here to stay. With celebrity trainers as popular as celebrity chefs, the fitness industry is enjoying a high-profile moment and the conditions cannot be beaten. Unshackled from the office, working flexible hours and seeing your clients get happier and healthier what could be better? The industry agrees, with the 2009 Sportspeople Workplace Survey showing 85.1 per cent of respondents from the sport, fitness and aquatic sectors were either satisfied or very satisfied in their jobs. Whether you picture yourself muscling-up your fellow mums or working your way onto Australias sporting fields, a career in the fitness industry can be as dynamic as you make it and the fitness industry is calling out for a diversity of trainers. One of the oldest Australian academies in the industry, ACPE, has been going strong since 1912 and has seen the growth in fitness first-hand. They recogni se that to make it in the industry, trainers need to be supported in their passion and encouraged to find their niche. Army Corps of Engineers Jobs 12 Series MOS

Army Corps of Engineers Jobs 12 Series MOS Army Corps of Engineers Jobs 12 Series MOS Army enlisted jobs are called military occupation specialties (or MOS). Within the Army Corps of Engineers, who are the builders of the Army, there are about a dozen jobs, including plumbers, firefighters, and carpenters. But these soldiers arent sitting behind desks and reading blueprints; they frequently do their work in combat situations. The Army divides its MOSs into Fields, of jobs that have similar missions. Below are some of the jobs that belong to the Corps of Engineer Field. Combat Engineer MOS 12B Combat engineers supervise or assist team members traveling over rough terrain in combat situations. The combat engineer needs to be an expert in mobility, counter-mobility, survival, and general engineering.  Their duties include building defenses to protect fellow troops and destroying obstacles.  This may include building bridges, roads or airfields, as well as laying and clearing mines. Bridge Crewmember MOS 12C These soldiers prep bridge sites, assembling fixed and float bridges. This work is performed under various adverse conditions, including combat. Crewmembers often work closely with combat engineers, who prepare firing positions for combat situations, often using bridges as lookout points. Diver MOS 12D As the name suggests, divers with the Army Corps of Engineers conduct underwater repair and maintenance work and may be involved in submarine rescue operations. They also support special warfare and explosive ordnance disposal troops while using diving gear. Part of their duties involves repairing underwater ship structures, such as submarine propellers and hulls. The ability to use SCUBA gear is obviously crucial to this job. Construction Engineering Supervisor MOS 12H These soldiers oversee the construction, repair, and utilities of buildings, warehouses, fixed bridges, port facilities and petroleum pipelines, tanks, and related equipment. They estimate the time and materials needed for jobs, and direct combat engineering missions. Prime Power Production Specialist MOS 12P These specialists operate and oversee the Armys electrical power plants, performing mechanical, electrical and instrument functions necessary to install and prepare power station equipment for initial startup. These soldiers will undergo training in electrical engineering, but their duties are more specific than electrical engineers duties. Technical Engineer MOS 12T Soldiers in this role are responsible for overseeing construction site development, which includes surveying, drafting and creating construction plans and specs. Theyre kind of the Army version of a construction site foreman.  These soldiers conduct land surveys and make maps, playing an important part of all Army construction projects. Carpentry and Masonry Specialist MOS 12W These soldiers perform many of the duties their civilian counterparts have on commercial construction sites, only they may be in combat zones while doing so. The structures they build include such things as bridge trusses and rigging devices. They work closely with combat engineers, building frames and roofs, as well as walls and columns. Geospatial Engineer MOS 12Y These soldiers extract geographic data from the Armys satellite imagery, aerial photography, and field reconnaissance and use that data to create maps and visualizations, which are in turn used for commanders who need to visualize terrain and battlefield conditions. Theyre often called upon to interpret complex imagery under intense conditions.

These Robots Kill Antibiotic-Resistant Bacteria

These Robots Kill Antibiotic-Resistant Bacteria These Robots Kill Antibiotic-Resistant Bacteria These Robots Kill Antibiotic-Resistant Bacteria Blood does a miraculous job of keeping us alive, vigilantly attacking bacteria and toxins around the clock. But with antibiotic-resistant bacteria on the rise, robots are being called to the rescue. Berta Esteban Fernndez vila, a postdoctoral researcher at the University of California San Diegos Jacobs School of Engineering, has created a nanorobot that can boost the bloods ability to fight infection. The tiny robots are made of gold nanowire and coated with a bacteria and toxin-slaying membrane. Powered from outside the body with ultrasound, the design may someday help save people from bacterial infections that doctors are finding themselves increasingly powerless to fight. Nanorobots coated in hybrid platelet/red blood cell membranes. Image: Esteban-Fernndez de vila/Science Robotics The coating is the devices biggest innovation. Platelets in the blood target bacteria while red blood cells neutralize toxins created by bacteria. Both do their magic with the receptors on their outer membranes. vila decided to combine the two. We take a blood sample from a patient, extract all the platelets and all the red blood cells, she says. Then we extract the membranes from the cells. The membranes are fused together using a physical, rather than a chemical, process. The platelet/red-blood-cell mashup is also resistant to disabling accumulations of protein and is not rejected by the body. For You: Insect-Sized Robot Takes Flight To make the final toxin-beating bot, pieces of gold nanowire are coated with the new membrane. The technique they used was so efficient, says vila, that we didnt have a bad batch of robots. Small defects in the design cause the bots to respond better to ultrasound, so vila made one end of the nanowire segments concave to keep the nanobots asymmetrical. The ultrasound sends the two microns-long nanobots moving at 35 microns per second. The bots swarm as a batch; there is currently no way to control individual nanobots. With this configuration, vila and her colleagues successfully reduced the presence of the antibiotic-resistant bacteria Staphylococcus aureus in a blood sample. In just five minutes the sample had three times less bacteria, she says. The team published its results in a recent paper. The next step is to try the bots in living animals, probably starting with mice. In vivo experiments will determine, among other things, how toxic the gold nanowire might be. We use gold because it responds well to the acoustic field, vila says. But we dont know if this amount of gold will be toxic or not. We dont think so, but were not sure. Other materials may do better in other fluids. Magnesium, for instance, might better survive water and gastrointestinal fluids. It doesnt respond as well to ultrasound at the moment, but vila and her colleagues are looking into ways of making the material more sensitive to the sound waves. Animal trials will also allow the team to focus on dialing in the right dosage for defeating bacteria, a challenge that is currently bigger than any design problem they face. vila and her colleagues targeted Staphylococcus aureus as a proof of concept. But the nanobots could theoretically be used against any malevolent bacteria. Everyday antibiotics are less and less and less efficient, so we have to find alternative ways to fight these infections, Avila says Using these robots, you can have better results. To accomplish goals, you need to enjoy doing hard work

To accomplish goals, you need to enjoy doing hard work To accomplish goals, you need to enjoy doing hard work In the eyes of a perfectionist, needing to have fun to be successful sounds self-indulgent. “No pain, no gain,” they harrumph. Under this mindset, the world is all-or-nothing, results are all that matter, and the miserable journey it took for you to get this success doesn’t count. But a new book is arguing that feeling miserable while working doesn’t work.“Finish: Give Yourself the Gift of Done,” by bestselling author Jon Acuff, uses studies and the experiences of famous athletes and philosophers to argue that we accomplish our goals much more easily when we enjoy the process. For example, Acuff cites his experience with creating a 30-day online challenge to help people finish goals as an experience that taught him what does and doesn’t work with goal-setting.The 30-day challenge was observed by a  University of Memphis Ph.D. candidate, Mike Peasley, who observed how the hundreds of participants interacted. Acuff and Peasley’s research concluded that “the exercises that caused people to increase their progress dramatically were those that took the pressure off, those that did away with the crippling perfectionism that cause people to quit their goals.”  They found that when participants accomplished goals they thought were enjoyable, they had their chance of performance success increase by 46%.How to enjoy hard work? Make it funThe idea of making hard work fun begins by understanding that you have control of your life and career, and you choose to make it enjoyable or not. Self-help speaker Ron Culberson, who advises employees to “do it well, make it fun,”  says that “a job is nothing more than a series of processes. If we take each process and analyze what we don’t like, there is potential to make it better.” So if meetings make you unhappy, try breaking down what part of the meeting is causing the most unhappiness, so you can see what issues to address. In his book, Acuff advises employees who find large goals to be overwhelming t o make the big goal more enjoyable by cutting it in half. Once we finish smaller goals consistently, his thinking goes, we’re more motivated to tackle bigger projects. If the work itself isn’t ever going to be fun, Acuff advises giving yourself rewards along the way to your goal that are fun.The other piece of advice people who make their living giving advice agree on? Learn to embrace the struggle of the journey to your goals. You’ll never ‘make it’As advice columnist Heather Havrilesky put it, thinking that there’s going to be a day when you “make it” and you won’t have to do hard work isn’t helpful, because that puts pressure on external factors to be your source of happiness. Instead, she advises people to learn to find joy in their day-to-day challenges: “As long as you imagine that the outside world will one day deliver to you the external rewards you need to feel happy, you will always perceive your survival as exhausting and perceive your life as a long slog to nowhere. Instead, you have to savor the tiny struggles of the day,” she writes. “Savoring these things requires tuning in to your feelings, and it requires loving yourself.”Havrilesky’s advice aligns with cognitive behavioral psychologists’ findings about the pitfalls of wanting to be perfect. Under the definition of perfectionist behavior, behavioral psychologists note that sure, an addiction to perfectionism creates high standards, but when you measure your entire worth in terms of productivity and accomplishment, you’re bound to fail because to err is human, and when you do fail, you won’t be able to move on and learn from it. Instead, you’ll be paralyzed by disappointment and you won’t be able to get work done.So to get work done right, you’ll need to embrace the challenges you’ll face and find motivating activities and rewards in the work itself that can keep you going.

Why Do Hiring Managers Care about Soft Skills

Why Do Hiring Managers Care about Soft Skills Why Do Hiring Managers Care about Soft Skills When you know you̢۪re technically qualified for a job, sometimes it can be hard to understand why hiring managers focus on soft skills instead. After all, you̢۪re good at what you do. Does it really matter if you̢۪re polite in emails or easy to talk to on the phone? The answer, of course, is yes, it definitely matters. Business is all about people, and that̢۪s why soft skills are so important. They facilitate the connection between coworkers and between customers and employees. If you have all the technical skills in the world but absolutely no soft skills like communication or mediation, you̢۪ll find it very hard for your career to take you where you want to go. What are soft skills? Soft skills include all personal interaction and emotional intelligence skills such as being positive and friendly, communicating, solving problems, observing, organizing, adapting and more. Soft skills are considered soft because you don̢۪t go to school or earn a degree or certification in them; they come from dealing with people and learning how to be a successful communicator in real life. Why do managers want soft skills? While soft skills are technically optional, hiring managers know that working on a team takes more than expertise. When answering an informal survey on Twitter, 70 percent of hiring managers indicated that soft skills were very important for the roles they hire. Managers: How important are soft skills for the roles you hire? Simply Hired (@SimplyHired) May 12, 2016 Furthermore, 62 percent of hiring managers said that between two equally qualified candidates, soft skills would stand out over extra certifications or high-profile references. Managers: Between two equally qualified candidates, what would make one stand out over another? Simply Hired (@SimplyHired) May 5, 2016 Working with people and customers requires a certain level of self-awareness and intentional communication. The better you are at communicating and working through challenges (often unrelated to your specialization) the easier it will be for you to collaborate with your coworkers and get work done. Can you learn soft skills? If you didn̢۪t learn soft skills organically or through your educational experience, it̢۪s not too late. You can improve these factors and become a more appealing job candidate. If you̢۪re a talented professional in your industry but you find yourself receiving poor performance reviews or struggling to earn the salary you want, soft skills can help. Our next article will dive into how you can learn and demonstrate new soft skills.

Proper Ways to Show Passion in a Cover Letter

Proper Ways to Show Passion in a Cover Letter Proper Ways to Show Passion in a Cover Letter There is the debate that “cover letters are dead”, but the reality is that some companies still request them. For every 40 to 50 job applications we fill out at Find My Profession, about 2 of those applications requirea cover letter (and that number continues to shrink). When cover letters are required, they usually ask questions that are geared towards finding out the job candidate’s passion. So, you must know the proper ways to show passion in a cover letter. 1. Open your cover letter with a personal greeting Use the name of the person you are going to speak with if you have it. If that is not possible try the greetings that look like you are addressing the “position”. For example, go with “Dear [person’s name]” or “Dear [Department] Team”. Skip the bland “To whom it may concern”. You convey passion in a polite way by showing that you are personable and did the research to find out who you will be speaking with. You are also directly addressing a person by name which is a very engaging way to get their attention, especially if the person reading the cover letter has already read hundreds of boring cover letters. 2. Show you researched the company and job you are seeking Anyone can say, “I really want this job because I love the company.” Do the work and take your passion a step further. Demonstrate that you know something about the company and tie it into something you feel passionate about. For example, try saying, “I was excited to see one of the responsibilities for this passion involves [here is where you tie in your passion].” In order to be able to write something like this, you have to thoroughly read the job description and the company website. More so, you have to know what you are passionate about before applying. You can also mention in your cover letter that you are aware of customer experiences others have had with the company or state something about the recent direction the business seems to be headed in. Show you follow the company and care about what happens to it. 3. Describe your qualifications with powerful verbs and action words A great way to show passion is by using words that help someone visualize you, in the act, of working for the company. The more active and colorful your words, the better. Sounding passive or apologetic makes your cover letter read as if you lack the passion to work for the company. Here is a list of action verbs to get a better idea of the types of words you can use in a cover letter. 4. Explain your quantifiable, concrete results Think of those times in your life when you know, beyond any shadow of a doubt, that you achieved something great. Now, take some time to practice and write about it. Read it back to yourself. And see if you describe your concrete results in a way that sounds apologetic, shy, or lacking strength. When you finally write your cover letter, be sure to explain the unbreakable, concrete results of things you had worked on in the past. It is one thing to say, “I created and executed a strategy from scratch that led to $1M in new revenue sales” (concrete) It is another thing to say, “I worked on this project as part of a team and we succeeded in reaching sales goals.” One sounds like you have passion and the other sounds like you showed up to work and did a job. 5. List reasons why you are personally and professionally excited to apply When you take the job description and list out why you are excited about each and every requirement (without writing a book), you show the hiring manager you are a passionate human who takes the time to think about how you can bring value to the company. Listing your skills is not enough. The passion comes in seeing how you explain the excitement of getting to use them and how. 6. Tailor the cover letter to the job Template cover letters just do not cut it. You have to show passion by tailoring your cover letter to the job at hand. Remember cover letters are also a chance to show off your writing skills, too. If you can write about things that make you feel passionate, the chances are you have a leg up on those without writing experience who try to submit cover letters.

How to Use Social Media to Find Freelance Work

How to Use Social Media to Find Freelance Work How to Use Social Media to Find Freelance Work 6 When you work in an office, your workload might gradually get larger and larger. But, most likely, your salary won’t enjoy a similar uptick. On the other hand, when you’re a freelancer and you take on more work, you get paid more money. It’s really as simple as that. And since you set your own rates, so long as you can find clients to agree to them, the sky is really the limit in terms of your earning potential. Finding clients as a freelancer, however, can be quite difficult. If it were easy, logic tells us that even more folks would be trying to make it on their own. To be fair, recent research indicates that by 2020, half of the U.S. workforce will be freelancers. The good news is that there are many ways to find freelance work and meet new clients, and so if you’re willing to try to get new ones- and aren’t afraid of being rejected- there’s a good chance you’ll be able to get more work if you put in the time. You can meet new clients at conferences and trade shows. You can meet them at networking events, or you could even have one of your buddies- or other clients, for that matter- make an introduction. You can also peruse job boards and the like. And you can use social media to find freelance work, too. Here’s how: Build a professional social presence. First things first: which platforms do you think your prospective clients are most likely to be found on? If the folks in the industry you’re targeting are most likely to hang out on Facebook, Twitter, and LinkedIn, by all means, target those networks first. But your Facebook page that has all those super sweet pictures of you doing keg stands in college? That’s not going to cut it. You need to build a professional page, like a complete LinkedIn profile, that gives readers a clear idea as to what your qualifications and experiences are without them having to spend more than a few minutes figuring out what you’re all about. Be sure to include the right keywords that are conducive to your industry, as well as the easiest ways to get in touch with you. That way, you increase the likelihood someone will contact you with a gig. Wouldn’t that be nice? Find others by using relevant search keywords. An easy way to figure out which organizations are looking for freelancers: do a quick search on social media sites like LinkedIn. For example, you can search phrases like “freelance writer wanted” or “freelance writers needed” to see whether it yields any results. Chances are you’ll see at least one or two businesses that are looking to hire some independent contractors. There’s no guarantee they’ll hire you, but at least you won’t have to reach out to a company in the dark in the hopes they’re looking for a freelancer. In other words, it’ll make your outreach more effective because you’ll only communicate with companies that are looking for folks like you. Promote yourself through blogs, tweets, and comments. In a perfect world, a million clients who want to pay you a billion dollars would email you every day because they stumbled across your LinkedIn profile. Unfortunately, it doesn’t work out that way. Once you’ve established your professional social profiles, it’s time to start promoting yourself to find freelance work. Publish blogs on LinkedIn and promote them via your Facebook page by posting excerpts and a link. Use Twitter to tweet promotions (e.g., “Looking for a freelance writer? I’m your guy! #freelance #freelancewriting #freelancers”). Sooner or later, an interested party will find your content and engage with you. The more frequently you post, the higher your chances are for that to happen. Find more tips for freelancers here!   Readers, what have you found effective to find freelance work?
